Dan people believe that the performer is transformed into a spirit by performing dancers. The language of spirits is often unintelligible, so the masked dancer will use it to communicate. The messages will be translated by the wise man who is present with the dancer during the ritual.

There are many Dan face masks. Each one has a unique function. They could be intermediaries between the village or the forest initiation camp. Many of them have become redundant over time and are now used for entertainment purposes, such as festivals or events for tourists or visitors.
